 Pet Adoption:

Pet Adoption should not be done on a whim.  The adoption of a pet carries with it all the cost and responsibility of a new family member.  The animal you adopt will be solely dependent on you for it’s food, shelter, health care and most of all companionship.  Please consider how much time and what resources you have to care for this new family member.

The initial cost of any pet i.e. adoption fee, spay or neuter, Rabies and yearly vaccinations, heartworm preventative and deworming medications,

A dog license and a name tag or perhaps a microchip are minimal compared to the cost of caring for the animal over it’s life span of 8 to 15 year. Visit this link to the ASPCA which will give you an idea what the cost of a pet could be.

Do you have the time and energy to feed it, clean up after it, exercise and train it and perhaps the most meaningful of all – time to relax and bond with the pet?  Puppies and young dogs are just like babies and 2 year old children.  Their attention span is short and gentle training is essential so they learn what is expected of them and what the routine is.  Have everyone agree on the training commands and use only these commands. Animals respond quicker if the same is used consistently.  Different commands from several people create confusion in both parties and frustration sets in.

The shelter animal you adopt may be confused in its new home.  They should always be on a lease and under an adults control when outside.  Depending on how fast they bond to you, it may take several months until they realize where “home” is.
