Give your pet a gift that will last longer than treats or the best chew toy this holiday season. A gift that will last a lifetime. A microchip is the best way to insure that your pet  will be returned to you.

Contact your vet and they will implant the chip and some will register your animal for you.  If your pets are already implanted and registered, be sure that your information is up to date.

PARVO, A DEADLY CONDITION OF PUPPIES is spreading throughout the county. 6/08

If your new 4 month old puppy hasn't received it's puppy shots he is at risk of getting Parvo.  This disease can kill quickly.  It is very important for the dogs life that he receives these vaccinations.  Ask your veterinarian.  Read more below: Canine Parvo.

A microchip can bring your pet home. "Frankie" a neutered orange tabby cat was brought to the shelter recently.  He was scanned for a chip and luckily the information was current.  His owner was contacted and they couldn't believe that he was at the shelter.  You see, his owner lived more than 300 miles away.  They had stopped at a rest stop about 40 miles from Colusa and the cat had run away in April 2007. The rancher found him in November 2007.  All shelters, animal control depts., and veterinarians can scan for microchips.  Contact your veterinarian.

Cat and dog overpopulation is a big story in America. And it's a sad one. Many animals are abandoned and left to survive on the streets. Many die from starvation or disease. The lucky few who find their way to animal shelters have a better chance, but if they cannot be adopted, they may have to be euthanized. At the Colusa County Animal Shelter from January through June of 2004, One hundred and eighty-seven (187) dogs and cats were sheltered, during the same time frame one hundred and twenty-seven (127) dogs and cats were euthanized.

Spay and neuter are medical terms referring to surgical procedures through which the reproductive organs of animals are removed. A vet will spay a female dog or cat and neuter a male. In both cases, the procedure is safe and quick. Most veterinarians recommend that dogs and cats be sterilized at around 4 months of age. Once they're spayed or neutered, pets cannot reproduce. Helping to control animal overpopulation.

The Spay Or Neuter procedure, besides helping reduce pet overpopulation, it provides several important benefits:

*  It can make for a better behaved, more quiet and affectionate pet.

*  Neutered males aren't as prone to fighting or roaming, habits that can get them injured, lost or killed.  They also won't be as susceptible to prostate problems and testicular cancer, which can translate into a longer life for your pet and lower veterinary bills for you.  Usually neutering early also reduces spraying and marking in male animals.

*  Spaying a female before her first heat cycle cuts the risk of mammary tumors by 99 %.  It also eliminates heat cycles and the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers.

*  Many counties reduce the license fees for animals that have been spayed or neutered.  That's another cost reducing factor for you.
