  • Again there is interest in obtaining a U-Haul trailer so we can use it for  storage.  We have located people who can help us remove it from the location and haul it to the shelter.  8/30/08

  • Where oh where to build a new shelter?  Our volunteers are scouring through the county books trying to find a parcel of county land that may be suitable for a new animal shelter.  There's not much to choose from. In reality there's only one piece of land available - 2.65 acres.   Anybody want to donate about 4 acres?  Something between Colusa and Williams?  The sheriff's dept. is still waiting to have the shelter assessment done so we're estimating the acreage that would be needed.  We'll keep you posted.........8/15/08

  • Does Colusa County need a spay/neuter program?  Would you participate in such a program?  Last month, July, 120 cats/kittens were euthanized - that's about 4 cats/kittens per day.   It would be available to all citizens of Colusa County, two animals per household per year and the owner would be reimbursed for a large portion of the spay/neuter fee.  This is a thought that's in the works.  If we are going to fight to implement this we need to know if anyone is interested. Look for a write up in the Williams Pioneer Review at the end of the month.  It's a free newspaper and you can find them in various stores throughout Williams and Colusa.    We welcome your comments  at foccas@colusanet.com      8/12/08            UPDATE 8/22/08: Good news - the program has been revised but it is moving forward. The revisions are:  one animal per household instead of two; and the reimbursed cost will be the actual cost of the sterilization fee up to a maximum of $100.  Bad news is the article in the Williams Pioneer Review will be delayed.   UPDATE 8/30/08 The proposal for the s/n program is on the sheriff's desk awaiting his approval.  We're keeping our fingers crossed.

  • Sutter County has a wonderful write up about their shelter in the Appeal-Democrat 8/11/08.  Their "old" shelter built in 1982 is outdated.  What does that say about our shelter which was built in the 1950's?  The Sutter County animal shelter is our "wish" list shelter - sort of.  Everyone needs to support Sheriff Marshall and speak in front of the Board of Supervisors to bring home the fact that our animal shelter is seriously antiquated.  8/12/08

  • FOCCAS booth receives a Second Place award at the Colusa County Fair this year.  Gayle and Carolyn really out did themselves on the decorating.  We are glad to be able to contribute the $300 dollars back into our funds to care for the animals at the shelter and abused large animals in the county. 6/24/08

  • Shelter Planners of America were contacted in November in order to provide the Sheriff's Dept. with a shelter assessment and what would be needed for a new county animal shelter.  The company sent a wonderful brochure along with a quote for a Shelter Assessment and Evaluation.  The is only the first step.  The fee for services is over $5,500.  It may not seem like much but with no extra money in the Sheriff's Dept or in the county, this will have to be delayed until next year.  Hopefully the Dept., the Board of Supervisors and the county auditor will see how vitally important this is.   The longer the project is delayed, the more expensive it becomes.  UPDATE 3/27/08:  The Sheriff will present the idea of having a shelter assessment  during the budget session in May.  We are keeping our fingers crossed that this goes through for the entire funds needed or even partial funds.  UPDATE 5/08:  The sheriff has submitted the request  - now we wait.  UPDATE 8/22/08:  We are still waiting to hear the status on this.  Just like the State, the county hasn't finalized the budget yet.
