BARNEYS STORY:  06/27/2006

MAN CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY TO PUPPY

On 6/30/05 an alert and caring citizen reported a situation of animal abuse to the Williams Police Dept.
The citizen saw a male pedestrian pulling a yellow puppy on a leash across the southbound I-5 on ramp. He lifted the dog approximately five feet in the air by it’s leash and intentionally slammed the dog down to the pavement. The man lifted the dog a second time and again slammed it into the pavement.
Officer’s responded and contacted the man, King David Due, a 34 year old transient with a last address of Redding, CA.
Due said the dog bit him on the hand and he threw the dog to punish it for biting. The officers noted the puppy was ill, appearing lethargic and panting heavily. Due stated the dog was sick and was on medication. Mr. Due made the statement that the puppy was part Rottweiler and “I was trying to beat the Rottweiler part out of him so the good Lab part would come out.” The puppy is a Labrador/Golden Retriever mix)
The concerned citizen positively identified Due as the suspect. He was then arrested for violating 597(b) of the Penal Code (animal cruelty).
The puppy was placed in quarantine at the Colusa County Animal Control Dept. because of the report it bit Due.

On 7/1/05 Animal Control Officer Elliott said the dog appeared to be stiff and sore and preferred lying down rather than standing or walking. The veterinary office that prescribed the medication was contacted, they stated the dog had a mild respiratory infection. The puppy has recovered from his illness and is being held as evidence.

King David Due is scheduled to appear at the Colusa Superior Court, Dept. #2, 532 Oak Street, Colusa on Tuesday August 23, 2005 at 1:30 pm.

Thank you to the courageous, caring citizen who witnessed this act of cruelty, had the fortitude to call it in to the police and to press charges against Mr. Due. Please show your support by appearing in the court audience on August 23. A deliberate act of violence, of cruelty will not be condoned by the citizens of Colusa County.

UPDATE: King David Due was scheduled to appear in court on August 23rd at 1:30 to hear charges for animal cruelty. Mr. Due did not show up, therefore, his dog is now county property. According to Chief Animal Control Officer Elliott, the yellow lab/hound mix puppy is now available for adoption. Please contact the animal shelter for further information about the dog 458 - 0247.
UPDATE:  "According to Chief ACO Elliot, the yellow lab puppy has been adopted by a great
family." King David Due currently has a warrant out for his arrest.
